Introduction to the Department of Livestock

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

The Afghanistan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University (ANASTU) was established in 1391 AH (2013 AD) in accordance with the Government's cultural policy and the National Development Plan, with the objective of providing sound professional education and training for the younger generation. The University commenced its academic activities with four faculties: Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, Economic Sciences, and Veterinary Sciences.
Simultaneously with the establishment of the University, the Faculty of Animal Sciences was founded with four departments: Livestock Production and Management, Poultry, Fisheries and Apiculture, Animal Breeding and Genetics, and Animal Products Technology and Processing. Initially, only the Master's degree program in the Department of Livestock Production and Management was operational. However, following the integration of the Faculty of Agriculture of Kandahar University into the Afghanistan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University, the Bachelor's degree program in Livestock Production and Management was also launched under the Faculty of Animal Sciences.
At present, practical and theoretical instruction is conducted only in the Department of Livestock Production and Management, which currently offers both Bachelor's (B.Sc.) and Master's (M.Sc.) degree programs.
The Master's program in Livestock Production and Management is academically supported through collaboration with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), India. Equipped with modern educational technologies, well-developed teaching facilities, and qualified academic staff, the Department has the capacity to educate and train students in various disciplines of Animal Sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
In addition to its regular academic programs, the Department organizes short-term and long-term refresher and capacity-building training courses for livestock professionals and animal producers in collaboration with the private sector, governmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
For the first time, based on the available facilities and in accordance with a decree of the Ministry of Higher Education, ten (10) students were admitted to the Master's program in the Department of Livestock Production and Management through the National Entrance Examination (Kankor) in 1397 AH (2018 AD). In Mizan 1398 AH (October 2019), under the provisions of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), India, these students were enrolled in the joint academic program.
Currently, nine (9) additional students have been admitted to the Master's program through the National Entrance Examination (Kankor), and their courses are being delivered online under the joint academic program between ANASTU and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), India.
